Many people had gathered in Jiangnan Universitys gymnasium to see the "Evergreen Tree" Jan-Ove Waldner with his friends Jorgen Persson and Fredrik Hakansson battle against their Chinese opponents.
However, the China-Sweden Table Tennis Challenge which took place on Saturday May 30th was not about fierce competition, but a friendly and relaxed ping-pong show which gave the audience an opportunity to be entertained by world famous table tennis champions.
In the first match, Waldner took on Wang Yinzhou, last years winner of the mens singles in the China University Students National Championships. The players took turns winning games until Wang in the last game catched up from being 5 points under to winning it with 11-9. After the first match which was played quite "normal", Jorgen Persson who undoubtedly was the showman of the Challenge got the audience in laughter as he showed off with long-distance cathes which was sometimes even far outside the fence surrounding the tennis table.
Waldner also showed off doing golf swings as winning gestures when winning points and nodding the ball as a football player. When asked after the games when he plans to retire, J-O said that "it depends on how long the fans stay interested"
